Relocalise Northern Rivers seeks to engage the communities of the Northern Rivers to increase the economic resilience and self-sufficiency of our region for a more prosperous future.
From this overarching goal, we examine many of the challenges faced by our economy and consider what prosperity would look like for this region. Specifically, we focus on the main features of a local economy, e.g., food security, affordable housing, energy security, transport, business investment, health and wellbeing, and business mentoring.
Over recent decades we have seen significant population increases, as well as changes in the demographic profile of the Northern Rivers. During this same period we have also seen a greater level of economic influences from organisations based outside the region, leaving us vulnerable to supply chain issues. This became particularly apparent during the floods of 2022 when the major food suppliers were unable to deliver goods to the region due to road blockages.
However our local farmers’ markets were able to continue to provide produce to their customers. We want to see the expansion of local goods and services like farmers markets, but also locally owned and managed businesses, in order to build our resilience against natural disasters and future economic shocks, such as what we are seeing now with high inflation.
Local businesses also recirculate far more money into their local economies than businesses outside the region through employing locals and engaging with other local businesses. This leads to the added benefit of weaving together a stronger community.
Relocalise Northern Rivers will:
Hold events to inform the community about the impacts of global trade on our local economy and steps we can take to improve our way of life here
Provide a directory of local businesses with metrics for local ownership, sourcing materials, employment and sales.
Facilitate localised investment and loans, such as loans for farmers to establish worker housing on their land.
